Starlight Studio & Art Gallery
December 2, 2005 – March 3, 2006
Opening Reception December 2, 2005 from 3-8pm

The Starlight Studio and Art Gallery, a program created by Learning Disabilities Association of Western New York, is pleased to present their first exhibition featuring the work of its studio participants. The opening reception will be held on Friday, December 2, 2005 from3pm - 8pm. The exhibition will be on view until March 3, 2006. The gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday 9am -– 4pm. This exhibition will also be open to the public Saturday, December 3 & Sunday, December 4 from 11 am - 6pm as part of Artists in Buffalo Holiday Open Studios and Galleries. This exhibition will include paintings, prints, drawings, and ceramic sculpture.

The Starlight Studio and Art Gallery provides individualized art instruction for adults with learning disabilities and neurological impairments. Participants work with professional artists, Carrianne Hendrickson, Joel Lewitzky and Maggie Parks to develop in the media of their choice. By bringing participants together with professional artists in a studio/gallery setting, Starlight brings “outsider art inside, opening new doors for both.

I printed the press release for this event-that says it best.
This is a great program that deserves a lot of attention. Any of us that have been teaching the arts knows that art opens many avenues for the student. Mix that with the fact that these students have special needs, and I think that leads to artwork from directions that we have not seen. Thanks to Maggie, Carrianne and Joel for helping us to see this angle!

Black and White Photo, Fall '05

I've got three great young people in my intermediate photo class this fall. Below you'll see some examples of their work. It is really great to be able to be a teacher for the teen art class. There is a lot of creativity and observation that they possess, which, in the end, inspires all of us - it makes us remember why we became artists in the first place. I can't speak for everyone in my position, but I hope that some of the class experience makes them want to keep going...
So, a sample of their work. I have to tell this group: you make me proud.
I also want to congratulate Joe Lopez for being accepted to the Squeaky Wheel, WNED, and the Preservation Coalition project "Portraits of Main Street." Let's all work to make this a reality! Visit www.squeaky.org/poms.html
Thanks to all three of you!
